A dialog will appear asking if you would like to restore your default update settings. Choose 'Restore Defaults', and your Mac will no longer receive public betas. What worked for me, was starting up in Safe mode by holding down the shift key.

In Safe mode, I was able to open the App Store and install the update. While everything worked a bit slower in Safe mode, it did complete the download, installed the update and restarted in normal mode.
