Abstract

Recently an excellent specimen of the horntail trilobite was collected at McGregor by Miss Florence S. Chapin a member of the geology field class of the McGregor Wild Life School. This fossil is so rarely found in other than fragmentary condition in Iowa that any well-preserved specimen deserves to be recorded and illustrated. The specimen presents the dorsal shield, is unrolled, and retains the head, thorax and pygidiurn or tail shield. The right margin of the head, the right free cheek and the tips of the tail spines are missing. When found only a part of the axial lobe and the ends of the pustules on the middle pleural segments were exposed. Careful treatment with potassium hydroxide and cautious use of needles and brushes have removed the limy covering. This cleaning process requires considerable time especially when the surface of a fossil, such as this one, presents so much relief.

Darwin Arts has announced the release of Trilobite 1.3, a Modular Synthesizer application and plugin for Mac OS X and Windows which features full visual patch editing, extensive parametric control, and an innovative patch breeding system to “carry your creativity into hitherto unexplored territory”.

Using the same natural phenomena that brought you jellyfish, the platypus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and yourself, this synth exploits Darwinian Natural Selection to help you create radically bizarre new sounds from basic acoustic building blocks.

Trilobite’s visual editor allows you to construct custom synthesis patches to create drones, keyboard instruments, effects… you name it. Once you’ve created a custom instrument, you can then use the Evolution Engine to create thousands of mutated possibilities, and even breed your new patch with others that you love.

This version of Trilobite introduces parameter naming features, new module types, four banks of demo patches, and several important bug fixes.

Both the Pro and Free versions now include a Signal Smoother module useful for portamento effects, and the Pro version introduces an A/B Gate module which can be used for vector synthesis effects, a vocal synthesizer and filter, sequencers, etc.

The Pro Version costs $69.00, with a feature-limited free version also available.
